Minnesota soils are
naturally rich in phosphorus. Excess phosphorus running into lakes causes
algae blooms that turn the lake green. Look for lawn fertilizers with a middle
number of 0 (phosphorus-free) at area nurseries.
Leave grass clipping on your lawn - they provide valuable nutrients.... equal to
one application of fertilizer per year.
Never rake leaves or grass clippings towards lakes, streams or wetlands.
Monitor irrigation practices to avoid runoff from over saturation.
Aerate or dethatch your lawn, every other fall, to prevent soil compaction and
promote a healthy root system.
Seed or plant bare spots to help prevent soil erosion. Grasses, shrubs, trees
and organic mulch ^ help keep soil in place.
(3^
