COiiMr.li MfSETlNG
m&R 2 2 1999 REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
CITY OF ORONO DATE: March 22, 1999
ITEM NO.: / 3
Department Approval:
Name Gregory A. Gappa
Title Director of Public Services
Administrator Reviewed:Agenda Section:
Eogineer's Report
Item Description: Hennepin County Road IS Restriping Project in Navarre
I have attached plans from Hennepin County for the restriping of CR 15 in Navarre. Completion
of this project is planned for this summer. The plan is to provide a left turn only and a through
traffic lane on CR 15 at the CR 19 intersection. There are currently two unmarked lanes at the
intersection, with both lanes being used for through traffic. This creates problems with yehicles
pulling out, into the through traffic in the right lane, when they get stuck behind left turning
vehicles. There are also problems with vehicles merging past the intersection where the road drops
back to one lane. These two unmarked lanes create confusion as drivers are not sure which lane
they should be in. The new lane configuration should increase safety at this intersection.
In the rest of Navarre, a dedicated lane for left turning vehicles will be provided with a through
traffic lane provided on the outside edge of the road. Currently, there are problems with left
turning vehicles stopping in the traffic flow and through traffic vehicles attempting to pass on the
right side. This new lane configuration will provide for safer left turning movements and better
through traffic movement.
This project has been requested by the City for the past several years and staff favors this project.
The Police Chief has reviewed ^ese plans and is strongly in favor of this project.
COUNCIL ACTION REQUESTED:
No Council action requested.
k
l
. ;.M7W)CWi tvr vu-Aiw-
