tactics
f'.'i
Developing skills, tactics
and strategies
As a youth coach it’s important that you develop the ability to
identify^ both efficient and inefficient performances of the
basic skills of the sport and lx* able to analy/e and correct
typical errors in performance. Ikring able to do so will assist
your players in the basic skill development necessary so that
they’ll be able to perform these skills in a competitive setting.
One way to help you develop this skill is to ba*ak ever)'
fundamental down to three basic com|M)nents: breaking
the task down, analyzing it, and making cairrective
suggestions to assist the pla)*cr in the development of this
essential skill.
Every sport is comprised of essential skills that requia* the
coach to have this ability. To be tcK) wrapped up in the X’s
and O’s and elaborate playlMH)ks with the expectation that
every' child will be able to execute your coaching
stratc^es is totally unnralistic. Stay focused on basics and
build their knowledge and skill level by inca*asing the
difficulty of the skill only after each step of the .skill is
mastered in logical pn>ga ‘ssion.
The coach must become a .student of the game and learn
all the niles as well as become familiar witli die rule book
the league is using. Also, don ’t a.vsume that the players
know all the rules. Teaching the rules to your players is
essential in the skill development process. If tlic players
don ’t understand the iiiles and how they’re applied it will
be a frustrating experience for both you and them.
Do the kids understand you?
Sports has a vcxabular)’ all its own and as the coach it
requires that you make sure every child understands what
you ’re .say ing. Ask the team the que.stion, ”Wliai do I mean
when 1 .s;ty to keep your eye on the haH?'”niose that
understand the term will tell you
and that will provide adequate
explanation for those that didn’t iL
Children with disabilities
deserve equal opportunities
( hildren with dis.ihilitics can he iiu hidcil on any team
and e xperience ihe joy of pla\ ing The Americans with
Disabilities Act says that we are noi onl\ ohiig.iied to
include all kills hut th.il we have the right and
responsibility to provide indi\idual accommodations,
suppc»rt and/or ail.ipt.itions lor the chiki to help them
e\|x*rience suci ess
a coach s responsibilit) includes helping children
accept the differences oI children with disabilities
and to be supportive and answer i|uestions.
a io.tch must demonstrate to the team that
accommodations (or athletes w ith disabilities aren ’t
an advantage
\.ith some creative thought any child should be able
to parlicijute in a meaningful wa\ (.isk for \our
players help, kills l an oiler some great suggestions),
if a cruel remark is made react immediately and
handle it in a turn embarr.issing way for both the
chilli who has the ilisability and the person who
made the remark
make sure the team rallies around the child with
the disability w ho heard a cruel remark ilirecteil .it
them to immediately reinforce that no one agrees
with the remark
skitts
>
undcrstanc* it.
A A Sh,»
Youth Sports Journal | Initial IssueIssue
#
k
