The approximate locations
for the remaining four options are shown in Figure 2. A brief discussion of each option is
presented below;
Option 1
Description: The outlet route would be entirely within the City of Orono at a location
approximately 750 feet west of the boundary with Plymouth. The outlet conveyance
system would be a combination of force main and gravity pipe approximately 2,200 feet
in length. As shown in Figure 2, the discharge pipe route would extend from the south
central shoreline of Mooney Lake to County Road 6, then east to Femdale Road. The
pipe w'ould connect to a recently constructed storm sewer catch basin on Femdale Road
just south of County Road 6. A 12”-diameter pipe would need to be jacked under the
highway. Discharge water would travel in storm sewer pipe within Femdale Road, then
through several stormwater management wetlands southeast of Hadley Lake in Plymouth
before reaching the City of Wayzata’s conveyance system.
Advantages:
•Discharge would be conveyed to a new storm sewer system capable of
handling the additional flow and for which easements are already
secured.
•New easement costs may be low. The owner of the land across which
the route traverses has indicated his willingness to grant an easement
free of charge. (Note: The high end of the project cost estimate range
assumes that permanent easements would need to be acquired along
the entire route of the new force main/gravity pipe while the low end
of the range assumes no easement costs would be incurred.)
•The lift station could be placed in a secluded area away from
residences and high traffic areas.
•Tree loss would be minimal, since the route is mainly through open
areas.
•An access road may not be required. The property owrer has
expressed a willingness to allow use of his driveway for maintenance
purposes. (Note: The high end of the project cost estimate range
assumes that a new access driveway would be needed, while the low
end assumes the existing private driveway can be used at no cost.)
Disadvantages:
The elevation change is large (more than 40 feet), which requires a
larger, more e.xpensive pump in the lift station.
Three-phase power will be necessary for operation of the larger pump,
which will require installation of a new line from County Road 6 to the
lift station (approximately 800 feet).
Pipe will have to be jacked under County Road 6
Estimated Cost:$190,000-5285,000
Mooney Lake Outlet
Feasibility Study
