COUNCIL MEETING
FEB 2 6 2000
REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION CITY OF ORONO
DATE: February 24,2000
ITEM NO:
Department Approval:
Name Ron Moorse
Title City Administrator
Administrator Reviewed:Agenda Section:
City Administrator's
Report
Item Description: Request for Stop Sign at Shevlin Drive and Willow Drive
At the January 24 Council meeting. Kurt Rakos of 2175 Shevlin Drive requested the City consider
a 3-way stop at the Shevlin Drive/Willow Drive intersection to address concerns regarding safety
and the speed of traffic. In response to this request, the Police Chief and the City’s consultant
engineer reviewed the request. Both recommended against the 3-way stop. A letter from Sheldon
Johnson of Bonestroo Associates and a memo from Gary Cheswick, Police Chief, are attached.
When Chief Cheswick discussed his findings with Mr. Rakos, Mr. Rakos requested an opportunity
to address the Council regarding his request.
Staff is recommending against the 3-way stop because the level of traffic at that intersection does
not warrant the 3-way stop condition. When a 3-way stop is installed at an intersection that does not
meet warrants, drivers tend to ignore the stop signs. This behavior also then tends to be applied to
other stop signs. Chief Cheswick has indicated the Police Department will monitor traffic speeds
and will take action to control the speed of traffic in the area.
COUNCIL ACTION REQUESTED:
Motion to deny the request for the 3-way stop at the Shevlin Drive/Willow Drive intersection.
