ORONO PLANNING COMMISSION MEETING <br />MINUTES FOR JULY 19.1999 <br />Connor stated the new sign will be situated on a platform approximately two feet lower than <br />the existing sign. Connor stated they are intending to try a Bright Light and a Cool light to see <br />which produces the softest light. The current sign is illuminated by two floodlights. The size <br />of the new sign will be 40 square feet, with the existing sign 48 square feet. <br />Hawn inquired what hardship exists for the variance. Hawn pointed out hardships typically <br />are imposed by the property. <br />Connor stated a larger sign is needed for visibility off of County Road 15. Connor stated a <br />number of trees and overgrown brush exist in the area, which causes the area to be dark. <br />Connor stated the sign needs to be located further back from the road due to a ditch in the <br />area. <br />Stoddard inquired whether the sign is equivalent to other church signs in the area. <br />Weinberger stated this sign was looked at in comparison to other church signs in the area. <br />Weinberger stated there also exists a utility easement in this area as well as a ditch, which <br />necessitates the sign be located further back from the road. Weinberger staled the sign <br />identifies the use of the property. <br />Kiuth noted Staff has recommended approval of this application. <br />Smith suggested the Applicant try the soft light first. <br />There were no public comments regarding this application. <br />Hawn moved, Smith seconded, to recommend approval of Application #2553, <br />Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 3745 Shoreline Drive, granting of a variance for <br />signage square footage to allow a 40 square foot sign based upon the hardship <br />demonstrated, with the understanding soft lights will be used to illuminate the sign. <br />and if the lighting proves to be too bright, this issue will be reviewed and approved <br />by City Staff. VOTE: Ayes 4, Nays 0, Abstention 1; Kiuth Abstained. <br />Kiuth indicated he abstained due to a lack of information regarding this application. <br />Hawn inquired whether a variance was granted to the Calvary Church. <br />Page 34
