ORONO PLANNING COMMISSION MEETING <br />MINUTES FOR JULY 19,1999 <br />Hawn stated It was her recollection at the 1997 hearing, there was discussion regarding the <br />possibility of redudng the stairway in an effort to reduce hardcover. <br />Sigel indicated they did consider reducing the stairway down to the lake. Sigel stated there <br />is a significant number of steps down to the lake, with the variance indicating that if the steps <br />are to be replaced, they could replace it with a four foot concrete walkway. Sigel stated the <br />decks are included in the current hardcover numbers. <br />Hawn indicated she would not be opposed to a variance to the average lakeshore setback. <br />Kluth noted the structural coverage, hardcover numbers, and encroachment into the average <br />lakeshore setback do not change with this proposal. <br />Stoddard moved, Kluth seconded, to recommend approval of Application #2552, <br />Steven and Sheila Sigel, 1399 Park Drive, granting of a variance to average lakeshore <br />setback to permit the conversion of a three season porch and construction of a master <br />bedroom addition. VOTE: Ayes 5, Nays 0. <br />9) #2553 GOOD SHEPHERD LUTHERAN CHURCH, 3745 SHORELINE DRIVE > <br />lES, 10:38 p.m. -10:52 p.m. <br />Mike Connor i igared on behalf of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. <br />Bottenberg stated the licants are requesting a variance for signage square footage to <br />constiuct and replace an existingvdeterlorating sign on the property. The existing sign was <br />constructed in 1956. The proposed sigrHafour feet by ten feet per side. The proposed sign <br />is smaller than the existing sign, but 28 square fbtl larger per side than the allowed 12 square <br />feet per side. Bottenberg stated the sign wilt not be illuminated and will be located in the same <br />location as the existing sign. The sign will be situated on a briCKbase approximately one foot <br />in height and will be at least five feet from the property line. The sign is ihtended to advertise <br />the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, a use approved via a conditional use permihadopted by <br />the Orono City Council in the mid 1950s. <br />Page 33
