•
Soil pits were made earlier that day for percolation tests. Several of the test holes v/ere open and
could be observed for soil color and texture. Soil colors were determined by matching them to a
Munsell Soil Color Chart. The soils were examined for hydric characteristics suc.i as: low
chroma, organics, mottling, gleying, and moisture. Soil samples were observed at points inside
the basins >vith some wetland characteristics, at the basin/wetland edge, and into the
zones. The soil pits were marked wiih orange stake flags labeled “A” ’xdthin the wetlarid, “3”
at the wetland edge, and “C” at the upland pit. Conditions at the soil pits near the delineated
wetland edges are described on attached Data Forms.
The wetland edge is usually determined to be near the point where evidence of subsurface water
is tvithin 12" of the ground elevation, wnere at least .^0% of the vegetation is hydrophytic, and
where hydric soil is encountered. In the areas delineated as wetlands at this site, the identifiable
vegetation was more than 50% hydrophytic and hydric sods plus evidence of wetland hydrology
were found.
Wetland 1 is mostly a Type 6 wetland with reed canary grass (Type 2) areas at die fringe. The
weUand is designated on the N\VI map as PFOlCd/PEMCd. The wetland has a variety of
vegetation includang dominants of willows, red-ozier, and reed canary* grass. There are ferns,
• willow <‘hrubs and aspen near the wedand edge. There is some upland golden red (Solidago
canadensis) just upgrade of the wetland edged. The soil characteristics were ty pical of Hamel
loam. There was no standing water in the wetland and no water in the pits, i placed wire stakes
with numbered pink flags at the edge of this wetland basin.
I also placed wire slakes with orange flags at die soil pits noted on Lie artacata Data rams. The
flags are labeled “A” in the wetland, ‘"B” at the wetland edge, and a: an upl^d pit. Data
Forms - Routine Onsite Determination Method were compieted for conditions at the
wetland and are attached to this report.
Othi*r small patches of reed canary grass with aspen or willows were noted. However, those
areas also included upland vegetation such as fescue, smooth brome ana oa.<s £ found
only the one wetland basin described above on this prcceny.
The Minnesota rules require that designers attempt to avoid wetland impacts. If your plans
include fill or grading in the wetland basins, you will need a Wetland Alteration Permit fi’om the
Minnehaha Creek Watershed District (MCWD). The delineated wetland edge must be shown
on your grading plan. Please contact me at 612-974-9856 vriih any questions regarding
wetland issues for this site.
it^Gronbtrg Orono
