MINIITES OF THE <br />ORONO PLANNING COMMISSION <br />Tuesday, Febiruary 19,2002 <br />6:30 o'clock p.m. <br />(MI2-2755 Long Lake Fire Station, Continued) <br />Rahn commented the tower could potentially become a training facility for others also. <br />Fritzler inquired whether the west metro area has a fire-training site that is available for training. <br />Jabbour stated he is unsure about the west metro area, but noted Edina is proposing a training facility <br />that would be available for all firemen. <br />Fritzler, Kluth, and Smith stated they are against the hose tower since no hardship has been <br />demonstrated. <br />Gaffron stated no hardship is required for the hose *owcr, but that the Planning Commission needs to <br />look at the impact on the neighborhood and how it can be mitigated. Gaffron stated the primary purpose <br />of the hose tower is for training. <br />Kluth moved, Fritzler seconded, to recommend denial of the conditional use permit for a <br />hose tower 35' in height VOTE: Ayes 6, Nays 0. <br />Hawn inquired whether the Planning Commission would like to give the City Council any admonitions <br />concerning this project. <br />Kluth noted other cities have restrictions on uses in residential areas, and recommended the Council <br />look at limiting the use of this facility. <br />Smith recommended appropriate lighting for residential areas be utilized on this fire station, and <br />requested no neon or flashing lights be utilized. <br />Hawn recommended use of this building be confined to fire-reiated purposes. <br />(Recess taken from 9:24 p.m. - 9:.* p.m.) <br />NEW BUSINESS, CONTINUED <br />(#8) #02-2746 MARK FINNEY, 3210 NORTH SHORE DRIVE, VARIANCE, <br />9:30 p.m. - 9:46 p.m. <br />Mark Finney, Applicant, was present. <br />Weinberger stated the Applicant is requesting variances to permit construction of a lakeside deck, <br />a 15 ’ by 10’ screen porch, and a 1,164 square fool two-story addition to the house. The addition <br />would c .iitain a detached garage, three bedrooms, bathrooms, and utility room. <br />A variance is required to permit the addition to encroach six feet into the ten-foot side yard setback <br />requirement, and a variance is also needed to permit an alteration to existing non-conforming hardcover <br />PAGE <9
