September 12» 2001
City of Orono
2750 Kelly Dr.
Orono, MN 55356
This Petition is in response to public hearing dated September 24, 2001 at 7:00 pm
at Orono City Hall in regards to Orono lake access alley, which has a long history
of providing sate access to Crystal Bay. The access was made possible by a private
donation to the public for a safe lake access over 80 years ago. This corridor is 200
feet to the south of Coffee Channel connecting county road 19 and Crystal Bay
(across from Super America, by Lord Fletchers). Now two homeowners are
requesting to have a donated Access Road Closed, even vacated
We feel as a community that providing public safety is the greatest responsibiiitv
of any public body. Orono has a strong history of providing public safety for all
forms of public transportation and Recreation including automobiles, bicycles,
horses, p^strians, snowmobiles, and boats.
Prior to a long-term solution being establiashed we are asking or requesting to use
this public property to provide the public with the safety needed in this area for
safe winter recreation . The way to do this is to allow continued use of this
alleyway or public right-of-way for all winter uses, except for automobiles.
Piease keep our public access open as it has historical use and can provide long-
term benefits for the citizens of Orono and surrounding communities. This public
access road is a priceless asset to the city of Orono and its residents. We have to
look at the future not just the present as this lake area is becoming more populated
and the lake is being used more and more for recreational purposes every year.
Please keep this access ooen for public use.
Sincerely, Area Residents
^90 daV8 for Safety** December 15*-M»ch 15*
