After a number of meetings, our
community decided to embark on a dredging project to remove
accumulated sediment from the existing bo«t channel by using the
Mud-Cat (National Car Rental) technique. The Mud-Cat was chosen
because it provides the method which causes least ecological
damage.
The Board of Director's of the Freshwater Biological Institute
agreed that the dredge could be placed on their land taking all
precautions to ensure that there is no return of nutrients to the
lake resulting from this activity. We enclose photographs of the
proposed dredging area and the proposed dredge retention site.
Unfortunately, the dredge retention site is less than 1000 feet
from the lake shore and would be in violation of an Orono City
Council Ordinance on Dredging Spoils. We respectfully request a
hearing to discuss a variance on this ordinance so that we can
proceed in obtaining the necessary permits to dredge.
Sincerely,
M
