f •
Deir Mayor or Council Members,
June 4,2002
% # m ^
i i _
Hi, my nameisKeatynBlaeaer. Iamt7*^graderatHiII School and our class is
currently learning about phcophates in lakes. Many people are unaware of the excess
phoqriiates in our great lakes that are causing ttw many algae. Yes, there is a bill passed
for tte 2004 to reduce phosphate use but we n^ to act sooner. Therefore 1 am asking
you to increase awareness about excess phosphatestn our lakes.
Many people do not know that phosphorous causes problems for our lakes but
maybe they would care in a year or two whm th^ are swimming in slime and algae. If
we wait until 2004 to do something about phosphines, the lakes will get worse and worse.
Every year even more pho^hate seq>s into our lakes and make swimming and boating
less enjoyable.
Summer is here and many people are fertilizing their lawn with inorganic
fertilizers that have many phosphates in them. If people would decide to do the right
thiitg by using organic fertilizer our lakes might have a chance of staying semi algae free.
Minnesota is frill of lakes and I hope these lakes can stay clean for as loiig as
possible. Since many people do not know the harm phosphates do to our lakes we should
work to create more awareness. I think people who are l^wledgeable about phosphates
should speak out and do seminars or make posters. If more people knew that excess
phosphates contribute to excess algae maybe more people would work harder to keep our
lakes cleaner. Please consider doing the following; create posters to educate people, have
seminars about phosphorous, or ask people to use organic fertilizers before tte bill is
passed in 2004.
Sincerely, >
>*/ /
;/
I -oy I L- i - a:- ' .. *-
Keatyn Blaeser r
JUN 2 4 2002
Cl I y uf ORONo
•*.
