ORONO CITY COUNCIL MEETING <br />MONDAY, JANUARY 14,2002 <br />3. James McGreevy—No Phosphate Fertilizer Legislation—Continued <br />of Metropolitan Municipalities, the Minnesota Lakes Association, the Minnesota <br />Environmental Partnership, among others. The bill is sponsored by Representative <br />Margaret Callaher in the House and Senator Linda Higgons in the Senate. Mr. McGreevy <br />stated he anticipates they will be successful next year. The main opponent is the Scott ’s <br />Fertilizer Company. <br />They are asking the cities to contribute to the cost of lobbying and public relations. The <br />steering committee created a formula of SO. 10 per city resident, which would be roughly <br />S750 for the City of Orono. <br />Sanscverc asked Mr. McGreevy about working at a reduced rate. He stated that he is <br />already on a reduced rate. Sansevere asked what the opposition was when everyone <br />knows phosphorous w ill ruin our lakes. Mr. McGreevy stated that there are agricultural <br />interests that worry this bill is the first step to regulate the use of phosphorous by farmers. <br />Also, Scott ’s has hired an effective lobbying team to talk to legislators in an effort to stop <br />the bill. <br />Mayor Peterson asked Mr. McGreevy to make a fomial written request for the financial <br />support. <br />Flint moved, and White seconded, to support the legislation against the use of <br />phosphorous in lawn fertilizer. <br />Vote: Ayes 5, Nays 0. <br />2. MS Society —Accept Grant Check <br />Sharon Deziel was present representing the MS Society with Jim and Sandy Anderst of <br />the Narrow s Saloon, where the money was raised through their charitable gambling. They <br />presented Mayor Peterson and Drew McDennott with a check for S2,000.00 to be used to <br />install a high-low drinking fountain at Navarre Park. McDermott stated that there is <br />currently no drinking fountain and it is the most requested item at the park. Mayor <br />Peterson thanked them for their generous contribution. <br />Jill Kohlen and Bob Fisher of Interfaith Outreach were present to thank the City for <br />supporting the Interfaith Outreach Housing Week. They presented Mayor Peterson with a <br />framed photo from the kick-off evening of Housing Week. Bob Fisher stated that they <br />raised about $515,000.00 this year. <br />4. Gabriel Jabbour—Update on Dakota Rail Corridor and Long Lake/Orono Fire <br />Station Project <br />Peter Johnson was also present.
