CITY PROCLAMATION <br />RECARDINC; <br />DR. MARTIN LUTHER KINO, JR. DAY <br />WHEREAS, January 15"' is the birthday of the late Martin l.ulhcr King. Jr.; and <br />WHEREAS, the third Monday in January has been distinguished as a national holiday to <br />honor the memory of iJr. King; and <br />WHEREAS, The King Center has named the 2002 theme for the Martin Luther King. Jr. <br />Holiday to be “Remember! Celebrate! Act!”; and <br />WHEREAS, Dr. King believed that eveiyone can serve the greater good - “Hvervbody <br />can be great, because evetybod) can scr\'c.”; and <br />WHEREAS, Corelta Scott King, in desciibing the meaning of the Martin Luther King, <br />Jr. Holiday, stated “It is a day of interracial and intercultural cooperation and sharing... Whether <br />you are African-American. Hispanic, or Native American, whether you are Caucasian or Asian- <br />American. you are part of the great dream Martin Luther King. Jr. had for America. 'Htis is not a <br />black holiday; it is a peoples* holiday. And it is the young people of all races and religions who <br />hold the Levs to the fulfillment of his dream."; and <br />WHEREAS, the City of Orono is committed to engaging people of ail races, classes and <br />ethnicities in working toward the greater good ol our community; and <br />WHEREAS, by observing the Martin I.uther King. Jr. I loliday as a time of <br />remembrance, celebration and action, our community re-dedicates itself to realizing Dr. King ’s <br />dream of equality and peace. <br />THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Orono does <br />hereby proclaim January ’ 21, 2002 as: <br />Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day <br />in the Citv of Orono. <br />Adopted by the City Council at a regular meeting held on January 14,2002. <br />ATrnST: <br />Linda S.
