ORONO POLICE DEPARTMENT ----------------------------- SEP 0 8 2003 y 11 f ur OHONO REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION Date:09/08/03 Item No: J (p Department Approval:Administrator Reviewed:Agenda Section: Name: Title: Kurt Erickson Sergeant Item Description: Disposal of Surplus Property Exhibits: Attached list of property to be disposed of DISCUSSION: The police department comes into lawful possession of property during it’s normal course of municipal operation, 'fhis property when unclaimed for over 60 days becomes “abandon property.” In the case of this property, all has been in police possession for at least one year and has not been claimed or the owner can not be identified. This property is taking up valuable storage space. City ordinance allows the council b> adoption of a resolution to authorize the disposal of said property after a notice is published giving 3 week notice of sale. (Sec. 2.61 sub. 2) The police department would like to use Soderholm Auction Company of Maple Plain to auction the items in question. The items while numerous, are of little value and not w oiih staff time to set up a local auction. Scdciliol.m’s will group the items into other auctions they have. Soderholm’s are willing to do this in exchange for compensation as follows; on items over $100 a 1 5% (per item) charge will be made, on items under $ 100 a 20% (per item) charge w ill be made and then a 5% clerking and cashier charge will l>c taken fr^m the proceeds. It is believed that this is a reasonable charge in light of the staff time needed to set up and conduct an auction. Soderholm's has a broad customer base that will attract more bidders and hopefully some of the sale cost w ill be offset by higher bids than if we tried to conduct a local auction. Unsaleable items will be donated to charity. (Good Will. ARC. Epilepsy Foundation etc) There are several items including a portable 4000 w att generator. Green Trees Road sign, portable gas driven air compressor, post driver and a truck tire on a rim that public works has indicated an interest in obtaining for use by the city. These items are to be transferred directly to public works for city use.
