r
k
Bonestroo Rosene Anderlik - St. Paul, MN - (6S1)636-1311
Based on the infonnation in the two previous tables, the conditions at the intersection would
inq>rove with die proposed turn lanes, except under all-way stop control. All-way stop control
appears to work tte best with the existing t^-pass lanes. This is due to the ability of through
tradBc on CSAH 6 to use either lane to travel through the intersection, rather than backing up in
only one lane.
Safety Improvements
The safe^ of the intersection could be improved through either a traffic control change and/or
sight distance inqirovement. As noted in the previous section, all-way stop is currently
warranted for the intersection. A traffic signal is also wananted based on BRAA collected
turning nxivement counts for the intersection of CSAH 6 and Willow Drive. A traffic control
change is only effective if the accident experience at the intersection shows correctable crashes,
such as right angle crashes. In this case, 12ofthe 18 crashes would likely be corrected by either
all-way stop or traffic signal control. A traffic control change at this intersecdon would likely
improve safety based on this informadon.
The sight distance to the east on CSAH 6 is currenUy well short of Mn/DOT road design
standards. Re-grading the road to improve the slope and improve the sight distance would likely
benefit safety at this intersecdon. To provide this improvement, the east leg of the intersecdon
would need to be lowered by about 1 foot over a distance of approximately 600 feet
Finally, another safety improvement could be made if the proposed geometry of the previous
intersecdon is implemented. Providing a raised, concrete me^an on CSAH 6 at the intersecdon
would physically separate the two direcdons of traffic. Medians are e^iecially effecdve on high
qreed roadways such as this CSAH 6.
Figures 3 and 4 show the intersecdon wifo the prv^osed capacity and safety improvements.
CSAH 6 A Willow Dr Intersection Review -9-City of Orono
4»...... an
4
J
