This is a hazardous
intersection that has a history of multiple personal injury accidents and several traffic fatalities over
the past several years. The accident crash and .severity rates, and crash density rates are significantly
above the metro and statewide averages for a Rural Two-Way Stop Intersection. About 2/3 of the
accidents at the intersection are right angle crashes in which vehicles on Willow Drive that are
crossing the intersection are hit by high speed through tralllc vehicles on County Road 6. These
accidents tend to be severe with a high incidence of personal injuries and fatalities.
Accident Rates
Crash Rate (per million vehicles) 1.71 Metro Average 0.30 Statewide Average 0.40
Severity Rate (per million vehicles) 5.14 Metro Average 0.60 Statewide Average 1.00
Crash Density (# accidents per year) 6.0 Metro Average 1.1 Statewide Average 0.7
This intersection is hazardous for several reasons which include the high speed and heavy tratTic
volume on County Road 6, substandard bypass lanes on the county highway, limited sight
distance at the Willow Drive slop signs, and significant queuing of traffic at the stop signs on Willow
Drive. This tralTic queuing, at the stop signs, is hazardous because motorists tend to take chances
and pull out into the high speed traffic on County Road 6 with less than adequate openings.
.»
1
I
