No. 152-105-01 <br />Our File No. 139-03-136 <br />Dear Dan: <br />1 am writing regarding the variance that the City of Orono will be requesting for the bridge <br />replacement. Once we have an opportunity to discuss the variance, the City Council will consider <br />a resolution regarding the variance. <br />The project in question involves replacing an existing 26-foot wide bridge in Orono. The bridge <br />serves primarily local residents. <br />Included with this letter are some photos of the project area and a map showing the project <br />location. <br />Variance Requested <br />MnDOT design standards for rural bridges calls for a minimum of 12-foot lane widths and 4-foot <br />shoulders. The curb to curb width of the bridge is the sum of the lanes width and shoulder widths <br />plus four feet. This would require a minimum curb to curb width on the bridge of 36 feet. We are <br />requesting a variance from Rule 8820.9920 to allow two 12-foot lane widths and 2-foot <br />shoulders. The specific variances requested are: <br />1. Two 12-foot wide traffic lanes and 2-foot wide shoulders on each side in lieu of the <br />minimum 12-foot wide traHic lanes and 4-foot wide shoulders required; and <br />2. A 28-foot wide bridge roadway (curb to curb) in lieu of the minimum 36-foot wide <br />bridge roadway required. <br />2335 West Highway 36 • St. Paul.
