m TO; FROM: DATE: Mayor Peterson and Council Members Ron Moorse, City Administrator Januaiy 14,2003 SUBJECT: Navarre Fire Service Update — Orono will be working with both the Long Lake Fire Department and the Excelsior Fire District to make the transition away from Mound for the provision of fire service to the Navarre area. Gabriel Jabbour and Jim Murphy have been meeting with the Long Lake and Excelsior Fire Chiefs to begin to plan the transition. The Excelsior Fire Chief is agreeable to providing substantial advice and assistance in 2003 in relation to the Navarre fire station, and the recniitment and training of firefighters to staff the new station. He has also indicated the Excelsior Fire District is open to providing the level of assistance iweded to ensure high quality fire service continues to be provided to the Navarre area in 2004 and beyond. At the January 1S meeting of the Long Lake Fire Advisory Commission, Chief Roehl indicated he will be obtaining the advice of a number of fire chiefs, incluctog the Excelsior Fire Chief, to assist him in initiating the firefighter recruitment process. The Commission members agreed the recruitment process should begin as soon as possible. Jste I i
