EXHIBIT B
11/2/2004
Janice Gundlach
City of Orono
2750 Kelley Parkway
Orono, MN S53S6
Rc: Wood platfonn at 1354 Pest Point Circie
Dear Janice;
I hope Uiat some of the facts below will help lay out the reasoiu we find it necessary to ha\-e a platform on our property for tire
purposes of holding our dock and its support structures. We are requesting a variance to keep tliis structure in place.
The wood platfo;*n on the lull by the lake is for the purposes of holding all of our dock pieces Witliout it there is no place to put our
dock. Tlie liill is approx, a 34 foot drop from the top of the lull, and it is about a 45 degree drop to the lake. Because of this slope
there is nowhere on the lull or shore to store a dock of any size.
Tlie pieces of the dock are as follows;
1. 16 docks sections of 5 feel by 8 feet.
2. 12 dock sections of 3.5 feet by 8 feet.
3. 53 verticle metal support poles.
4. 100*200 metal horizontal support poles.
5. 20 support poles for a dock canopy.
If we are required to tear down the storage platform we will have a hardsltip. Leaving the dock in the water would destroy it. To
replace the dock would be in the $25,000.00 range
We are not looking to have any more room titan enough to adequately store tlte dock and the support structures tluit are needed to
keep the dock in place during the use in the summertime. This platform is about the smallest that is necessary to hold all tlie pieces.
My wife is on tlte board of the Lake Minnetonka Assoc., and we are veiy concerned about the look of tlte lake and any erosion issues
that could impact the lake. We Itave recently rip rapped our shore line because of tvave erosion and tlte slope that could give way if
we did not take adequate nteasures to ensure the integrity of tlte shore line.
The stairs going down to the lake are a hazard and will need to be addressed in the future as we have had people fall down the stairs
already. It is very steep, and we are conunitted to solve tliis over time, but it costs a lot of money and we are saving for it. We only
want a safe walk down to the lake willt adequate room for dock storage and nothing else.
In our new house plans we have pulled the house back from die lake, and are reducing the hard cover as well. Tltis should show our
good intentions in working tvith tlie city of Orono.
We appreciate your consideration of our request for a variance to keep this platfonn for the necessity of storing our dock and its
support pieces in the winter time.
Thank
Denny & Amanda Walsh
1354 Rest Point Circle
Orono, MN 55364
612-414-5055
