She became <br />aware that Orono did not have a reader through her contact with our CSO officer Chris Pharo. She <br />has donated a similar device to South Lake Minnetonka in the past. The device is used to check an <br />animal to detennine if an owner has had a microchip implanted to aid in identification of the animal <br />should it be lost. Chris Pharo estimates he would use the device at least once per week a'l .i oficn it <br />could be more. <br />The device cost about S250. It will give a reading that will give us an owner’s name, address and <br />phone number. VVe arc finding more and more that pets are having microchips implanted. Dr. <br />Waples became aware that we did not have this tool after we had impounded her dog which did have <br />a microchip implant. We have had several other cases where we found out after the fact that pets we <br />have taken into custody could have been identified and returned to their owners sooner had we had <br />tins tool. <br />COUNCIL ACTION PEOUESTED: <br />A motion to approve the donation of a Shearing Universal Microchip Reader by Dr. Patricia <br />Waples of the Excelsior Animal Hospital for use by the Orono Police Department and thanking <br />her for the generous donation in the interest of pets and their owners.
