Box 66 <br />Crystal Bay, MN 55323 <br />Dear Mayor Peterson and Council Members, <br />a 9 200^ <br />On behalf of the Western Communiiies Action Network (W'eCAN) Board <br />of Directors, I am asking the City of Orono to support our request for <br />Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds. <br />WeCAN is the community-based human ser\ice organization dedicated to <br />helping families achieve greater self-sufficiency and stability. We have <br />been providing a variety of services to low-income residents in twelve <br />communities in western Hennepin County for over 14 years. WeCAN is <br />the sole designated provider of emergency human ser\ ices in your <br />community. Our mission is to provide a safely net to these families during <br />a time of crisis. Our programs include emergency housing and utility <br />assistance, job counseling, family support services, public assistance <br />intake services and Meals on Wheels. <br />In 2003, we served over 1,700 households in our serv ice area. This reflects <br />a 40% increase in the number of households sen ed in the prev ious year. <br />During these tough economic times and a climate of job lay-offs.O- we <br />have seen an increase in the number of clients seeking assistance for the <br />first time. The majority of our clients have household incomes considered <br />to be low or very low A financial crisis can be devastating for most <br />families. W'eCAN was able to provide the guidance and assistance needed <br />to maintain some family stability. <br />Enclosed for your review is detailed 2003 demographic information about <br />the services provided in your community and surrounding area. <br />WeCAN serves the fcUowUigoaiiuniinities: Greenficid, ladepcadeooe, Loretto, Maple Pkia.
