The applicant is projiosing <br />a 9’ 2” tall x 11 ’ wide monument with 56 s.f. of sign face, including a 30 s.f. static <br />electronic readerboard. 'I'he proposed sign is to be located at the nortliwcst c»'rner of the <br />interse ction Old Crystal Bay Road and Highway 1 2 on school dis trict property. <br />Staff Recommendation: Planning Department StaB rccotiimcmls approval of the sign <br />size va*‘iance and conditional use permit for a new campus monument sign. <br />Hardship: Current Orono sign codes do not address institutional uses within residential <br />districts making it difficult to meet the needs of schools and other institutional uses within <br />R-Districts. <br />Pertinent Zoning Ordinanee Sections <br />y Sec. 78-418. Conditional u.scs. <br />Within any RR-IB one-family rural ••csidcntial district, no structure or land shall <br />be iKscd for the following u.scs without a conditional use permit: <br />(1) Public .schools and parochial or private schools which teach a curriculum similar <br />to a public .school, provided no building shall be located within 50 feet of any lot <br />line of an abutting lot in an R district and a fence is erected 15 feet or more from <br />all street lot lines where the abutting u.se is for open play, and nursery schools <br />providing 50 square feet of playground space |)er pupil. <br />> See. 78-419. Accessory uses. <br />Within any RR-IB one-family rural lesidentin) district, the following uses shall be <br />permitted accessory uses: <br />(4) SigiKS, as regulated in this chapter.
