The applicant is proposing a <br />y’ 2 ” tall X I r wide monument with 56 s.f. of sign face, including a 30 s.f. static electronic <br />readerboard. The proposed sign is to be located al the northwest corner of the intersection Old Crystal <br />Bay Road and Highway I? on school district property. <br />Planning Commission Recommendation <br />On January 18, 2005, Planning Commi.ssion voted 5-1 on a motion to recommend approval of the sign <br />si/e variance and conditional use permit for a new monument sign with the stipulation that the <br />proposed 1 ’x8 ’ panel to be used as a “.sponsor panel ” not be permitted. Commissioner Bremer voted <br />against the motion stating that she supported the variance and conditional use permit but would have <br />supported the sponsor panel. <br />Stuff Recommendation <br />Staff recommends approval of the location and design of the proposed monument sign, as it will <br />replace the existing sign which is .showing its age, and should result in reduction or elimination of the <br />variety of temporary signs placed on this corner from time to lime announcing school functions. <br />i'hcrc arc no standards within our zoning code to address imstitutional signs. 3 he zoning code docs not <br />addrc.ss whether a spon.sor panel is appropriate for signage serving an institutional use such as a <br />school. Should the Council wish to consider allowing a sponsor panel within the monument sign, it <br />may be appropriate to di.scuss some potential guidelines for the proposed sponsor panel. Depending <br />on the nature of the sponsoring entity the .spon.sor ])anel might take on a slightly commercial feel, or it
