The applicant is proposing <br />a 9’ 2" tall x IT wide monument with 56 s.f. of sign face, including a 30 s.f. static <br />electronic readerboard. The proposed sign is to be located at the northwest comer of the <br />intersection Old Crystal Bay Road and Highway 12 on school district pro perly. <br />Staff Recommendation: Planning Department Staff recommends approval of the sign <br />size variance and conditional use pennit for a new campus monument sign. <br />Hardship: Current Orono sign codes do not address institutional uses within residential <br />districts making it difficult to meet the needs of schools and other institutional uses within <br />K-Districls. <br />Pertinent Zoning Ordinance Sections <br />> See. 78-418. Conditional u.se.s. <br />Within any RR-IB one-family rural residential district, no structure or land shall <br />be used for the following uses without a coiHlilional use pennit: <br />(I) Public schools and parochial or private schools which teach a curriculum similar <br />to a public school, provided no building shall be located within 50 feet of any lot <br />line of an abutting lot in an R district and a I'encc is erected 15 feel or more from <br />all street lot lines where the abutting use is for open play, and nursery schools <br />providing 50 .square feet of playground space per pupil. <br />V Sec. 78-419. Acccs.sory uses. <br />Within any RR-IB one-lainily rural residential district, the following uses shall be <br />permitted accessory uses; <br />(4) Signs, as regulated in this chapter. <br />1
