MN 55441 / 612/559-1059 <br />McCombs-Knutson Associates, Inc. <br />12800 Industrial Park Boulevard <br />Minneapolis, Minnesota 55441 <br />Attention: Mr, Fred Malueg GME Job No. 743 <br />Preliminary subsurface exploration for proposed <br />residential street and subdivision construction <br />at the existing waste water treatment lagoons in <br />Long Lake, Minnesota <br />Gentlemen: <br />In accordance with the authorization given to us by Mr. Fred <br />Malueg, we have completed two soil borings for this project. <br />Enclosed please find the soil boring logs and a report describing <br />and interpreting these conditions. <br />The borings were located in street areas based on the site plan <br />submitted to us by MKA. The purpose of the borings was to obtain <br />preliminary information on general soxl conditions within the <br />lagoon. Because of the existing fence around the facility and the <br />unknown depth of ice and water on the lagoons, we elected t-o drill <br />the borings with manual equipment. Our original intention was to <br />obtain split barrel samples with a modified Scunpling method, using <br />a standard split barrel sampler and an 89 pound hammer. However, <br />when we encountered deep organic soils, we proceeded- to advance <br />the borings and obtain samples by the auger method in accordance <br />with ASTM: D 1452. <br />In the two borings drilled, we encountered 1.5 to 4 feet of ice <br />and sludge at the surface, overlying frozen sludge and non-frozen <br />sludge to depths of about 3,5 feet. Underlying the sludge in all <br />the borings, we encountered black to dark brown amorphus and <br />fibrous peat to depths on the order of 12 to 17 feec. At these <br />depths we encountered a black silty sand. Because of the need to <br />use the manual equipment, we could not advance the borings below <br />this depth. <br />Based on the soil conditions found in the borings, construction of <br />residential units in the area will require excavation/replacement <br />or the use of deep foundations, such as driven treated timber <br />pil:.-s. As a preliminary estimate, the depth of excavation would <br />have to be at least 16 feet and possibly deeper, depending on <br />variations in the depth of the organic soils across the site. <br />GEOTECHNICAL • MATERIALS • ENVIRONMENTAL SOILS <br />WILLIAM C.
