16
09/20/2022 Page 1 of 2

Notes by: JO & KG
Open House Notes:
1.The Open House was attended by around 30+ people on Saturday, September 17th from 2-5. Many
participants had already answered the second survey online, but 9 paper surveys were filled out. A few
participants had also attended Open House #1.
2.The event was staffed by Victoria Seals (Council Member), Brian Roath (Park Commission Chair), Adam
Edwards (City Administrator), Katherine Gould (Bolton & Menk) & Joel Odens (Bolton & Menk).
3.As heard in Open House #1, the naturalized, ‘hidden gem’ character of the park is highly valued by the
majority of residents. Several people came to the open house to oppose the rowing house, which is not
being considered as part of the master plan.
4.While not included in the survey, a number of participants spoke in support of the idea of interpretive
signage at the park describing the history of the site, the cabins on stilts, etc. This effort could include
interviewing seniors who have lived in Orono for a long time, and members of the Dayton family.
Resources for interviews and other Orono history include Brant Dayton, David Hetches, Elle, Bob &
others at the history museum, Fred Winston, John Gareheartson (possibly involved with the original
park design), etc.
5.A few residents would like additional information on the administrative details of the project, including
when construction might occur and if proposed improvements will raise residents’ taxes.
6.Several participants voiced the importance of improvements blending in with the existing site, using
natural materials and avoiding big structures.
7.Most residents favor replacing the existing portable toilet with a vault toilet. Several mentioned that
they were less concerned with the type of facility, than with the frequency at which it is cleaned.
8.Many residents are concerned that jet skis pulling up on the beach could be a safety hazard to people
and lead to erosion of the beach. There is a desire to separate boating, swimming, and fishing areas. A
few people would like the no wake zone to be larger and enforced.
9.One participant desires greater delineation of the beach and surrounding grass areas. Several people
requested more sand on the beach.
Summit Beach Park Master Plan Open
House #2 Summary Notes
September 17, 2022 2:00 P.M. – 5:00 P.M.
In person at Summit Beach Park
Appendix II: Open House Summaries
