AGENDA ITEM

Prepared By: Reviewed By: A. Carlson Approved By:

1. Purpose. The purpose of this action item is to authorize staff to seek a fire department identification
number from the state Fire Marshall’s office.

2. Background. The City of Orono currently receives fire and rescue services from the Long Lake Fire
Department (LLFD). The City of Orono has formally notified the City of Long Lake that we will not be
extending that contract arrangement beyond its current expiration date of December 31st 2025. At the
September 12, 2022 meeting Council directed staff to initiate the process with the State to establish a
municipal fire department. Per discussion with the State Fire Marshal’s office the city will need to apply
for a fire department identification number regardless of whether it takes over control of the existing
LLFD or starts an Orono Fire Department from scratch. To get an identification number the city needs to
provide the state with a letter resolution of intent to establish a municipal fire department and
confirmation for the 911 service provided of their ability to act as the public safety answering point for
the same.

3. Staff Recommendations. In order to receive a fire department identification number, staff
recommends the council adopt the resolution at exhibit A and authorize the mayor to sign the letter at
Exhibit B.

COUNCIL ACTION REQUESTED
Move to adopt Resolution No. 7293 at Exhibit A and authorize the mayor to sign the letter at Exhibit B.

Exhibits
A.
