More than one grant was <br />often made in each category, and this list <br />does not include all grants made. It does, <br />however, represent the broad range of <br />interests and water issues addressed by <br />Fountainhead this year. <br />x:yv ,• -I:v <br />/ <br />I’e T <br />|v <br />Fountainhead helped encourage these seven <br />summer students: (front) Eva Tannander. Washington. <br />A new space to work and live. <br />Expanding and Updating Equipment <br />New NMR Users <br />The Hormel Institute of Austin, Minnesota, <br />and the University of Minnesota ’s <br />department of pharmacology have been <br />contracting for time to use the Institute ’s <br />new nuclear magnetic resonance <br />spectrometer, bought with Fountainhead <br />funds this year. <br />Called simply the NMR, the apparatus <br />has such research advantages and saves so <br />much time that several agencies and <br />organizations have asked to use it. <br />Encouraging Scientific Teamwork <br />The First Summer <br />Interns <br />The first Malcolm Moos Visiting Professor, <br />Dr. Mary Mennes Allen, helped initiate <br />another first at the Institute: its new summer <br />internship program. <br />With fellowships from the Foundation <br />through Fountainhead, seven undergraduate <br />students spent eight weeks doing research <br />projects related to those in progress at the <br />Institute, consulted with faculty, and shared <br />their results and problems with their <br />colleagues. <br />Supplying Space to Work and Live <br />A Dome Home <br />Laboratory and living space in the form of a <br />36-foot diameter dome home was recently <br />completed with Fountainhead funds at the <br />Cedar Creek Research Station, 30 miles <br />north of St. Paul, Minnesota. <br />As part of the University of Minnesota ’s <br />field research program, more than forty <br />researchers can live and work at the site.
