• -Jl- <br />'■a <br />I <br />7: <br />Rani <br />X nX.-- <br />i i a-;': •.. r <br />■•*, . ■ .:' :'k <br />Annual Report Issue <br />Volume 8, No. 4/Fall, 1983 <br />of Freshwater m <br />k ~ j <br />ri’ r <br />UL <br />;5 <br />i:. <br />,- jV; <br />0/1 the horizon oj the Center for the Great Lakes lie three new eihtcation programs. <br />The Center For <br />The Great Lakes: <br />Meeting the <br />Challoiges With <br />Knowledge <br />A $153,994.00 grant from the Northwest <br />Area Foundation is enabling the Freshwater <br />Society to plan and carry out three major <br />education programs for the Center for the <br />Great Lakes, based in Chicago. <br />The grant will further the Freshwater <br />Society goal of providing information <br />to business, industry and policymakers to <br />assist in the long range planning and <br />management of water concerns. <br />According to Christine Olsenius, <br />coordinator of the Freshwater Society, the <br />grant will provide funds to: <br />1. Publish a regional directory of public <br />and private groups involved in resource <br />management in Great Lakes states and prov <br />inces. The directory will provide <br />information to people interested in water <br />and land management issues, policymaking, <br />business, industry, and public education; <br />2. Publish a bimonthly regional report <br />synthesizing and analyzing Great Lakes <br />issues; and <br />3. Develop regional seminars for business <br />executives to examine the implications of <br />current water problems to the business <br />community. Industry and manufacturing <br />account for 44 percent of water used in the <br />United States each year, and the factors <br />which affect the cost of the water they use <br />will affect the production of goods. <br />Ihe Center for the Great I.akes was <br />founded in January. 1983. with the support <br />and planning of the Freshwater Foundation. <br />Foundation Chairman, Richard G.
