Membership is <br />open to everyone. <br />The impact of the Society s accomplishments over the past <br />five years ranges from local to international. Some examples <br />are the following: <br />■ Organized the Minnesota Year of Water Awareness in <br />1979. The year-long program coordinated efforts of 22 <br />state agencies and organizatiotis in focusing attention on a <br />precious resource people take for granted. <br />■ Coordinated a statewide “Wetlands Awareness Week." <br />which involved 35 organizations and reached almost a <br />million people. <br />B Sponsored four national conferences: <br />The first directed public attention to water. <br />The second focused allention on a critical water issue: <br />health. It was the first conference held in the Midwest to <br />address the health effects of water pollution. <br />The third developed a process be which both the private <br />and public sectors could prepare lor the changes In use <br />suppliesnecessary lor managing our limited water <br />The fourth analyced the political, legal, economic ami <br />^.vironmental ranrificatlons of diverting water from the <br />other regt:. <br />■ Wrote and distributed 25.tHK) copies of a shoreline <br />brochure, which told what people who live near lakes cm <br />"The maintenance of our freshwater supplies needs the support of a well- <br />informed general public, and the Freshwater Society is the only <br />organization which offers thb opportunity." <br />—Dr. Joseph T. Ling, vice president. 3M Company <br />The Society develops impartial programs from the <br />information generated through research to facilitate <br />education in an attempt to motivate people to act — <br />the three-step process necessary for change to occur. <br />Category <br />....... <br />do to maintain a lake ’s water quality. <br />Helped plan water awareness projects in other states and <br />Canada. <br />Provided information and perspective for three television <br />documentaries, two local and one national, aired in 1980: <br />WTCN-TV’s “A Hard. Hard Rain." WCCO-TV’s “The <br />Quiet Crisis." and public television's NOVA segment “The <br />Water Crisis." which reached an estimated seven million <br />viewers. Also provided similar help to Boston TV station <br />WNAC. <br />Provides audio-visual programs on water issues. <br />Helps groups produce radio and television programs and <br />conferences. <br />Writes or helps write numerous features for magazines and <br />newspapers. <br />Distributes Facets of Freshwater, an in-house newsletter <br />published quarterly as an update of Foundation and <br />Institute activities. <br />Publishes the annual Journal of Freshwater for members <br />of the Society.
