October 19, 1983 ob # 1980
Joe Backes Page 2 of 2
RECOMINDATIONS: It is our recommendation that the site is suitable for
dn onsite sewage disposal system. YJe reco.nmend that the system be installed
according to the attached specifications. These specifications are based
on a design using innovative materials for the drainfield.
The innovative drainfield material recorrunended is SB2 manufactured by ADS
_ (advanced Drainage Systems, Inc). The material consists of a large
diameter (10 inch) corrugated plastic pipe with two rows of drain holes
spaced 120 degrees apart. This material is wrapped with a filter fabric
designed to filter out infil;ration of soil particles into the tube, but
to allow water to pass from the tubing drain holes into the soil. It
is used in lieu of rock and smaller dismeter distribution pipes. The
material was developed in Texas and has been used extensively there
where rock was in short supply and has been used in some pilot installations
under the scrutiry of U of M agricultural extension service in Minnesota,
A primary benefit on this particular site is that it would not require
transporting rock to the relatively inacessable island site with construction
located some 20 feet hier than the lake level.
Since SB2 tubing is an innovative material, the City of Orono has no
design standards for its use. The manufacturets technical literature
suggests that one foot of SB2 tubing would provide the same drain field
capacity as 3 square feet of conventional drain ield using rock and
smaller diameter distribution pipes. Accordi.ng to information you have
provided, the proposed construction for the site would be a seasonal
cabin falling under the type III ctagory according to the MPCA onsite
sewage treatment standards. The structure would have 3 bedrooms. Using
tl-ie largest percolation rate of 21 r,u.nutes per inch, MPCA requirements
for this type structure occupied year round would call for 36I square feet
of standard drain field. On this basis, we recommend installing a total
of 120 lineal feet of SB2 drain tubing for the drain field.
Very trul,y yours,
TO?4 SrffTH ASSOCIFTES, INC I hreby ee-ry tha tn;s plan, s^ec;'cat.n, or
1'eporiwaspreparedy ms pr un;r ;hy ir„-t
ei'% suprvscn and i;iai 1 an a d::iy Ra,s;r
B Pr;ssicei F^ci::car C:.::c: t:tc L:vS of tnp
Txors x sr, PE st,Gf Minr.so a
encl Logs of soil borins
Percolation test data sheets T:,'`5 `. `",'i{
Site evaluation location plan ate ——-- Rts• No. 4044
Speci.f ications
TOM SMITH ASSOCIATES inc
