In order to establish proper frost protection of the footings and structural stability of the <br />wall, several feet of fill will need to be added at the front of the wall, and/or the wall will need <br />to be underpinned with helical piers or a similar method. <br />6. The footing of the wall has been exposed and undermined from wildlife burrowing activity. <br />See Item 5 above for recommended repairs. <br />7. Refer to the attached photos for additional notes and observations. <br /> <br />OPTIONS FOR REPLACEMENT <br />1. For this location, a rock/boulder wall similar to the newer wall at the north end of the failing <br />wall could be considered. Alternatively, a segmental block (i.e. Versa-Lok, Anchor) retaining <br />wall could be designed and installed. These types of walls do not require frost-depth footings. <br />They are constructed on aggregate leveling pads 1 to 2 feet below grade. <br /> <br /> <br />Figure 1: Existing, nearby stone retaining wall <br />2. Replacing the wall with a similar CMU wall would require construction of a concrete footing at <br />least 42-inches below grade. The front-to-back width of the footing could exceed 6-feet. <br />Generally, these types of walls will disturb more area than rock or segmental block walls <br />discussed in Item 1 above. <br /> <br />DESCRIPTION OF TERMS <br /> <br />Terms used in this report to describe the condition of observable components and systems are listed and <br />defined below. It should be noted that a term applied to an overall system does not preclude that a part <br />or a section of the system or component may be in different condition: <br /> <br />Excellent- Component or system is in “as new” condition, requiring no rehabilitation, and should <br />perform in full accordance with expected performance. <br /> <br />Good- Component or system is sound and performing its function. Although it may show signs of <br />normal wear and tear, some minor rehabilitation work may be required. <br /> <br />Fair- Component or system falls into one or more of the following categories: a) Evidence of <br />previous repairs not in compliance with commonly accepted standards, b) Workmanship not <br />in compliance with commonly accepted standards, c) Component or system is obsolete, d) <br />Component or system approaching end of expected performance. Repair or replacement is <br />required to prevent further deterioration or to prolong expected life. <br /> <br />Poor- Component or system has either failed or cannot be relied upon to continue performing its <br />original function as a result of having exceeded its expected performance, excessive
