r"Municode Page 1 of 2 <br /> Orono, Minnesota, Code of Ordinances >> Title V - PUBLIC PROTECTION >> Chapter 46 -FIRE <br /> PREVENTION AND PROTECTION >> ARTICLE II. - FIRE PREVENTION AND FIRE SAFETY <br /> STANDARDS » DIVISION 3. - FIRE LANES » <br /> DIVISION 3. - FIRE LANES u <br /> Sec.46-81.- Established. <br /> Sec.46-82.-Standards. <br /> Sec. 46-83. -Fire lane signs and marking. <br /> Sec.46-84. -Maintenance. <br /> Sec.46-85. -Obstructing. <br /> Sec. 46-81. - Established. <br /> (a) The council provides for the establishment of fire lanes for purposes of ensuring immediate <br /> unobstructed access for emergency vehicles and equipment. <br /> (b) Whether marked or unmarked,fire lanes are established at all public or private fire hydrants,which fire <br /> lanes shall extend ten feet on either side of the hydrant and 20 feet in front of the curb or pavement <br /> edge nearest the front of the hydrant. <br /> (c) Whether marked or unmarked,fire lanes are established at all building exits required by the fire code or <br /> the state building code,which fire lanes shall extend ten feet in all direction from the exits.Where larger <br /> fire lanes are required,they shall be established and marked as provided in subsection (d)of this <br /> section. <br /> (d) The chief of police is empowered to order the establishment, designation and maintenance of fire lanes <br /> on public or private property wherever and to whatever extent as he may determine is reasonably <br /> necessary to ensure open and unobstructed emergency access. In this determination,the police chief <br /> may confer with and accept the recommendations of the building official or the fire chief of the <br /> applicable fire service district. Fire lane orders shall be in writing and shall be served in person or by <br /> registered letter upon the property owner of record, or in the case of commercial properties, may be <br /> served upon the tenant occupying the property. <br /> (Code 1984. §9 34(7)) <br /> Sec. 46-82. -Standards. <br /> The actual size, location and extent of required fire lanes shall be determined by the police chief in <br /> consideration of the particular access need and configuration on individual properties.As a minimum, all <br /> marked and designated fire lanes shall be at least 20 feet in unobstructed width, shall have at least 13 feet six <br /> inches of vertical clearance, shall where necessary provide for a turning radius of at least 50 feet, and shall be <br /> constructed of all-weather surfacing capable of carrying a vehicle axle loading of five tons(10,000 pounds). <br /> (Code 1984, §9.34(8)) <br /> Sec. 46-83. - Fire lane signs and marking. <br /> (a) When a fire lane has been ordered to be established pursuant to this division, one or more permanent <br /> upright metal signs bearing the words"NO PARKING—FIRE LANE"or similar words, if approved by the <br /> police chief, shall be placed designating the restricted area. The number, size and location of required <br /> signs shall be determined by the police chief. <br /> (b) When the fire lane is located on public property or within a public right-of-way,the required signs shall <br /> be erected by the city or by the public agency having jurisdiction over the property. <br /> (c) When the fire lane is located on private property,the required signs shall be erected by the property <br /> owner at his own expense within 30 days of the date of the order establishing the fire lane. <br /> (Code 1984. §9 34(9)) <br /> Sec. 46-84. - Maintenance. <br /> http://library.municode.com/print.aspx?clientlD=13094&HTMRequest=http%3 a%2f%2fli... 10/5/2011 <br />
