Their participation on the team has been wonderful for them and their development. With •
COVID, there has been a lot of isolation and a significant lack of social interactions for
young teens. Participating on the rowing team has allowed them to make friends, get
outside to exercise, and it's helped them gain confidence in themselves as athletes and
people. The summer of 2021 culminated in their first regatta where they not only had a lot
of fun but won one of their races! They came home from this race saying they were
"hooked" on the sport and plan on being part of the team going forward.
My Husband and I have also come to know and enjoy the Long Lake community due to
rowing. Our trips to rowing practice have encouraged us to explore the area and we have
become patrons of many local restaurants and businesses that we would not have visited
had it not been for rowing. These include Birches, Primo, San Pancho, Caribou, Carbone's
and Harvest Moon.
We support the public-private partnership that LLRC is proposing and we believe that the
construction of a permanent home in Summit Park will not only benefit the club, but the
community in general. The current lack of shelter can be very difficult in bad weather and is
a bit unsafe in regards to theft (team equipment and rower's property that's left unattended
during practices). The new boathouse will be another attractive 'feature' on Long Lake that
will be a benefit to the entire community. The public showers can be used by all lake-goers
as well as the picnic tables and public meeting room. Perhaps the biggest benefit will be a
reduction in crime as this park will transform into a nicely-maintained area with more
features and high-quality activity.
This boat house will benefit the club that has helped our daughters so much. It will also
benefit the Long Lake community as a whole. Please consider this proposal as it is truly a
win-win for all involved.
Sincerely,
Kristin &James Illingworth
