 , "
Mr. Jn E.Jrat- ' -2- A ri128 1999
o p ,
a location approximately 20 feet from the well. Sorted and graded drainfield-type rock was
found, confirming that a drainfield was present. A sewage tank was located and found to be
45 feet from the well. Mr. Edson informed you that the well was constructed too close to the
'ainfield and that either the drainfield and contaminated soils within 50 feet of the well must be
excavated and removed, or the well must be sealed and a new well constructed in a complying
location. He also stated that if the sewage tank was a sealed septic tank, and if the contents had
been removed, no further action concerning the tank would be required. However, if the tank
was found to be a cesspool or seepage pit, and if contaminated soils had not been removed, then
either the contaminants must be removed, or the well must be sealed and a replacement well
constructed in a complying location.
On April 5, 1999, Mr. Steven Bennett of the MDH met Mr. Weckman and you on the property to
observe the excavation of the drainfield and the verification of the sewage tank. The drainfield
was found to be located within 10 feet of the well. The sewage tank was found to be a concrete
block seepage pit located approximately 45 feet from the well. During the excavation process, a
second drainfield was discovered, and a second open-bottom concrete block seepage pit was
discovered on an adjacent lot owned by the same property owner. Both of the drainfields were
excavated and removed. Both of the seepage pits were removed along with contaminated soils.
Mr. Bennett noted a strong sewage smell associated with the drain field and seepage pits, even
though they had been taken out of service in 1993. Clean fill was hauled to the site, and the
excavations were backfilled. The entire backfilling and grading operation was finished on
Apri17, 1999.
Please contact Mr. Edson at 651/215-0820 or me at 651/215-0831 within ten days of receipt of
this letter if you believe our information is incorrect or incomplete, or if you have any questions
about the content of this letter.
Sincerely,
' ---
Ronald D.
