The purpose of this council action is designate Bederwood Park as and authorized area for <br />mountain bike training. <br /> <br />2. Background. The City was approached by the Orono Youth Mountain Bike Club about training <br />space opportunities in City Parks. The Club identified Bederwood Park as place to conduct skills <br />training for their younger riders. The area the club is interested in using are the areas around the <br />perimeter of the park that are not part of the baseball or sports field areas. The Parks Commission is in <br />favor of the Club’s use of the park. To use the area the Club will use existing dirt and grass pathways <br />into and out of the park. The club will also create some additional pathways in the wooded are to in the <br />northwest corner of the park. The work will include raking debris, removing deadfall, establishment of <br />some natural obstacles and some simple stream crossings. <br /> <br />3. Orono City Code. The use of the park area will require the city to designate the park or areas of the <br />park designated pathway in order to comply with city code. The pertinent section of code is below. <br /> <br />Sec. 22-93. Riding bicycles, nonmotorized vehicles. No person shall ride a bicycle or other <br />nonmotorized vehicle in any park or swimming beach except on designated pathways, and then only <br />in such manner as to not threaten or endanger the person or property of others. <br /> <br />4. Staff Recommendation. . <br /> <br />COUNCIL ACTION REQUESTED <br />Motion to approve the attached resolution designating Bederwood Park a designated pathway (area) for <br />mountain bike use. <br /> <br />Exhibits <br />A.
