This Dakota place name, meaning “big island,” will serve as a reminder <br />that this is Dakota land. A land acknowledgement will recognize the relationship <br />between this place and the Dakota people through time immemorial. <br />Sugar Camp. For generations, Dakota people gathered among the island’s old-growth <br />sugar maples to tap trees and boil sap for syrup and sugar. Their annual visits to the <br />island were marked roughly by the change from ice to open water.
