DRAFT Comprehensive Fire Service Study MEDINA, MINNESOTA <br /> <br />Matrix Consulting Group Page 14 <br /> 3 Fire Rescue Services <br /> <br />The City of Medina provides fire protection services through contracts with four different <br />fire departments. This chapter provides an overview of the fire protection system including <br />the resources available to the City and a historical review of the workload of the Fire <br />Departments. <br /> <br />1 Hamel Fire Department <br /> <br />Hamel Fire Department provides service to the east and northeast areas of the City of <br />Medina with an estimated population of 5,371 and approximately 1,854 households. <br /> <br />1. Organization of the Fire Protection System <br /> <br />The Hamel Fire Department (HFD) was formed in 1928 and formally incorporated in 1932. <br />In the early years equipment for firefighting operations included a bucket brigade using <br />three-gallon cans to a four-wheeled trailer with a water pump. The first motorized <br />apparatus acquired was a 1931 Model A, that was used for firefighting operations. The <br />fire station was built in 1966 with an addition in 1986. Incorporated as a non-profit <br />corporation, the department is governed by a Board of Directors. The Fire Chief reports <br />to the Board of Directors of the Hamel Fire Department. <br /> <br />Today the HFD operates from the same station with a variety of apparatus, equipment, <br />and a volunteer staff. The organization chart that follows illustrates the current Fire <br />Department organization. <br /> <br /> <br />
