B. FIRST PHASE PLANTING, TRAIL AND SPECIAL AREA PAVING
PLAN.
A proposed planting master plan has been inchtded in the submittal. A range of
tree, shrub and ground cover plant types have been indicated on the plan. In
addition a minimwll of a sixteen foot buffer zone of special planting, a mixture of
shrubs and trees, has been proposed 'ulunediately surrounding the wetland basins.
The concept for the planting plan is generally to create a natural appearing
woodland framework throughout the property with special use areas and garden
spaces carved out within that franlework. Generally, the landscape is more
formally arranged near the chlrch building, and more informal as one approaches
the periphery of the site. The proposed plant species are consistent with the
guidelines of the City of Orono, including the wetland buffer zone. Please refer
to the planting plan for the detail plant list and design intent.
To be consistent with the natural, informal character, it is intended that the plant
material be implemented at a variety of sizes at the inception of the planting plan.
A inix of screen planting canopy trees, evergreen trees aud flowering trees and
shrubs has been proposed to provide year round interest. Due to potential issues
on availability of specific plant material, a range of plant species have been
proposed to allow flexibility at the time of purchase.
Several trails have been indicated on the plan. They would range in width froin
three to five feet. Paving materials are to be crushed granite or woodchips.
Two paved areas are also shown on the plan. The paving would consist of a
masonry or natural stone material, and would be set on a compacted sand bed.
C. NEW SIGN
The existing St. Edward's sign along County Road 6 is in deplorable condition
and must be replaced. Front and side elevations of the proposed replacement sign
are included in this submiital package. The intent of the design is to pickup on
some of the qualities of the actual church struchire and create a visual connection.
The size of the sign is indicated on the plan. It is proposed as a double sided sign.
The square footage of the sign face is within the city's maximum limit. The
height of the sign is approximately six inches above the ten foot height limit due
to the aesthetic proportions of the base, sign and cap. Concealed down lighting
will iliuminate the sign face. Two additional lights on each side of the sign will
sit in fl1e landscape and subtly wash the wall and sign face of the sign. Evereen
junipers will cloalc the ground plane stu7ounding the sign. The base of the sign
will sit a higher elevation than the existing sil as a result of the new grading.
,...--. ,;%=:, ,
  F   ''`;;
Lr gl y ',, " xr:,!
. ....: .r ...:-' .,
 •.
