<br /> Retrofitting rain gardens into Sarteil's street reconstruction project
<br /> THESARTELLRAINGARDENPROJECT was an innovative solution to common drainage problems that
<br /> RECEIVEDTHE2OOHLEAGUEOF beautified the neighborhoods, involved residents, generated
<br /> regional interest, and helped meet the City's MS4 requirements for
<br /> MINNESOTACIlTESCITYOF water quality protection.
<br /> EXCELLENCE AWARD
<br /> During the 2007 Capital Improvements Project, two residential
<br /> developments directly adjacent to the Mississippi River were
<br /> selected for upgrades. Prior to this reconstruction project, all
<br /> stormwater runoff was directed into the river with no pretreatment.
<br /> The main project goals were to upgrade existing infrastructure
<br /> (roads, storm sewer, water main, and sanitary sewer), implement a
<br /> stormwater treatment system using rainwater gardens, and involve
<br /> area residents.
<br /> Fifty-one rain gardens were constructed on a voluntary basis. The
<br /> rain gardens allowed the reconstruction project to meet MS4 permit
<br /> requirements.
<br /> Rain garden design and installation fees totaled $105,500, a
<br /> significant savings over traditional ponding methods. City council
<br /> and staff members collaborated with residents to make this project
<br /> a success. Support from the Minnesota DNR and the Stearns
<br /> County Soil and Water Conservation District also helped achieve
<br /> positive results.
