Goals of Project:
Goal 1: Transition the Orono existing server/storage/backup architecture to a hybrid model
using the LOGIS hosted environment and a single VMWare-ESXI server hosted at Orono City
Hall.
Goal 2: Upgrade/refresh all Windows server to Server 2012R2 or Server 2016, as Server 2008
is deprecated and no longer supported by Microsoft.
Summary of Proposed Solution:
Current environment: 3 physical servers
Proposed environment: 1 physical VMWare server located at Orono City Hall to run 2 virtual
servers, and 4 additional virtual servers hosted in the LOGIS cloud, totaling 6 virtual servers in a
hybrid architecture.
The proposed solution will run 4 mission critical virtual servers on the LOGIS hosted
architecture. The proposed solution also includes a single VMWare-ESXI server to remain at
Orono City Hall. This VMWare server will run 2 Windows servers. Together, there is 6 virtual
servers.
The single VMWare-ESXI server will also have the ability to run additional servers in the future.
A good candidate would be an IP based surveillance solution.
The solution has been verified to be adequate for processing load, storage speed, storage
capacity, and network bandwidth. The LOGIS hosted environment has redundant datacenters,
redundant copies of storage, automatic site resiliency, and staff available 24/7 to keep the
systems running.
The new server design has and a more purposeful application design focused on high
performance, high availability, and decreased ongoing maintenance.
LOGIS hosted backups will perform daily backups of all 6 servers in the environment. It will
include daily backups with 30 days of retention and monthly backups for 12 months. The
current solution is only backing up a fraction of the current servers, and is only able to keep 3-5
days of retention due to limited storage resources.
The method of server migration will be a deployment of new Windows servers with either Server
2012R2 or Server 2016. This will eliminate all the Server 2008R2 servers, which will be
deprecated in the next year.
2
