September 4 , 1998
page Two
Near the top of the pedestal construction there should be two
horizontal dowelled connections into the corner of the foundation.
The depth of holes for the dowels should be approximately 6"-
Additionally, we recommend the pedestal be reinforced .in the center
with a *4 steel reinforcement bar. All dowelled connections and the
steel reinforcement shall be provided with a minimum of 1 1/2" of
concrete cover in the construction. A pinned connection should be
provided between the wooden column and the pedestal as previously
described in our report of August 24 , 1993 .
The extension of the brick masonry construction for the column
support must be isolated from the replacement, construction of the
concrete stoop. The isolation joint construction between the brick
masonry and the stoop should be sealed with a high grade ,point
sealant to prevent moisture migration into the joint construction.
The structural distress in the existing stoop most likely was the
result of moisture absorbed by the wooden column which caused
swelling of the wood. The swelling resulted in tension failure in
the surrounding concrete .
Respectfully,
Professional EEigineerin consultants , Inc .
J n F. Gislason, Jr. , P.E.
taff Engineer
JFa/fM
