Site Visit
SER ecologists examined the subject property for areas meeting jurisdictional wetland criteria
during the site visit. One area meeting the jurisdictional criteria of a wetland was flagged, and the
boundary determined and delineated. The approximate wetland boundaries are outlined in yellow
(Figures 5 and 6).
Accumulated precipitation since 4/01/2014, as recorded at MSP and reported by the USDA
National Agricultural Statistics Service in cooperation with the Minnesota Department of
Agriculture reports that for the week ended October 26, 2014, was 6.25" above normal.
Precipitation for the period 10/20/14 to 10/26/14 was reported to be 0.38" below normal and for
the preceding 4 weeks was 0.43" below normal. The PRISM Climate Group
(http://prism.nacse.or comparisons/drought.php) drought index for the period August 1, 2014 to
October 31, 2014 indicates that the period received 50 to 70 percent average precipitation for the
project area.
Wetland 1 is in part a streetside drainage ditch between Tonkawa Road and the tennis court and
in part a drainage swale blocked at its lower end by an earthen embankment. At wetland sample
1-1 WET, the wetland is classified as a PFOIA, Type 1, Floodplain Forest. Here the wetland
vegetation was dominated by silver maple (Acer saccharinum FACW) and eastern cottonwood
(Populus deltoides FAC) trees. The transition from wetland to upland can be marked by a
significant topographic break as well as the appearance of vegetation in the herb stratum, and to
a lesser extent, in the sapling/shrub stratum.
The soils at sample point 1-1 WET consisted of silty clay loam at the surface that became silty
clay at a depth of 26 inches. Hydric soil indicator Al2 (Thick Dark Surface) was present. The
soils at sample point 1-1 UP consisted of 30 inches of a silty clay loam with no indications of
hydric soil.
Wetland hydrology was only present at sample point 1-1 WET as evidenced by the primary
hydrology indicator B8 (Sparsely vegetated Concave Surface) as well as secondary hydrology
indicator Geomorphic Position (D2). Sample point 1-1 UP was located at an elevation
approximately 3 feet higher than 1-1 WET. No hydrology indicators were present.
Wetland sample 2-1 WET was taken within the updated NWI area listed as a L2UBH. We would
classify the delineated wetland as a PEM IB, Type 2, Fresh (Wet) Meadow. At this location The
tree stratum was dominated by silver maple (Acer saccharinum FACW), common buckthorn
(Rhamnus cathartica FAC) in the sapling/shrub stratum, water horsetail (Equisetum fluviatile
OBL) in the herbaceous layer, and riverbank grape (Vitis riparia FACW) in the woody vine
stratum. When compared with the upland sample 2-1 UP, this area's herbaceous layer was
dominated entirely by Canada bluegrass (Poa compressa FACU). In addition to the transition in
vegetation, the topographic change was also used in determining the wetland boundary.
Both soils at 2-1 WET and 2-1UP were found to be hydric. Silty clay loam soil was present to a
depth of 8 inches at wetland sample 2-1 WET. At 8 inches, the texture transitioned to silty clay
and was found to be depleted, meeting hydric soil indicator Al 1 (Depleted Below Dark Surface).
Upland sample 2-1 UP trended similarly, transitioning from a silty clay loam to silty clay.
Svoboda Ecological Resources 1080 Tonkawa
Project Number: 2014-039 3 Orono MN
