Department Approval: <br />Name Jessica Loftus <br />Title City Administrator <br />REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION <br />DATE: January 9, 2017 <br />ITEM NO: 13 <br />Administrator Reviewed: Agenda Section: <br />Y"-4 City Administrator's Report <br />Item Description: Declaration of a Vacancy in the Office of Council Member <br />Orono Council Member Dennis Walsh was elected to the office of Mayor in the 2016 General <br />Election and will assume such office on January 9, 2017. Since Mr. Walsh will assume the <br />duties of the Office of Mayor prior to the end of his term as Council Member, a vacancy will be <br />created on the Council, effective January 9, 2017. Because there is less than two years <br />remaining on the vacant Council Member term, the Council will make an appointment to the <br />position to serve the remainder of the term that expires on December 31, 2018. The first step in <br />this process is to adopt a resolution declaring a vacancy in the office of Council Member. A <br />resolution is attached for your consideration. <br />The Council can begin to advertise for candidates to fill the vacant position at any time. <br />Typically we publish a vacancy advertisement on our city website and send it to the newspaper. <br />Drafts are attached for your input so please revise the job posting and application to fit the City <br />Council's needs. <br />COUNCIL ACTION REQUESTED: <br />Motion to adopt a resolution declaring a vacancy in the office of Council Member and direct <br />staff to advertise the position. <br />
