ORONO POLICE DEPARTMENT <br />"Dedicated to fairness, service, pride and duality" <br />POLICY: 7003.0 <br />EFFECTIVE DATE: January 1, 2018 <br />REVIEW DATE: <br />APPROVED BY: <br />Title: Canine Team <br />Distribution: Sworn Personnel <br />Purpose: The purpose of this policy is to provide guidelines for the management and use of <br />canines for a variety of operational purposes. <br />7003.01 Procedures: <br />Supervision of the canine team <br />a. During routine patrol shift, canine teams will be under the direct <br />supervision of their respective shift supervisor. <br />b. The on duty sergeant is authorized to call in an off duty canine team <br />when needed. <br />c. A specific canine supervisor will be assigned to oversee training and <br />administrative functions of the canine program. The canine supervisor will be <br />responsible for maintaining training and canine usage records prepared by each <br />handler. <br />7003.02 Public Education: <br />a. Police canines and handlers will participate in public education <br />demonstrations as directed. <br />b. The canine handler shall be responsible for ensuring the location for the <br />canine demonstrations provides a safe environment for the canine and spectators <br />7003.03 Mutual Aid request: <br />Mutual aid request for canine shall be directed to the canine or duty supervisor <br />and shall be consistent with the department's mutual aid policy. <br />
