Unless the leave would unduly disrupt the operations of the City, the City shall grant a <br />leave of absence without pay to an employee whose immediate family member, as a member of <br />the United States armed forces, has been ordered into active service in support of a war or other <br />national emergency. "Immediate family member" means the employee's grandparent, parent, <br />legal guardian, sibling, child, grandchild, spouse, fiance, or fianc6e. The amount of leave <br />provided under this section is limited to the actual time necessary for the employee to attend a <br />send-off or homecoming ceremony for the mobilized service member, not to exceed one (1) <br />day's duration in any calendar year. Where possible, notice is to be provided to the City at least <br />ten (10) working days in advance of the requested leave by completing a "Request for Leave" <br />form, copy attached. <br />An eligible employee may also take unpaid FMLA leave under the Military Family <br />Leave, Qualifying Exigency section of this handbook arising out of the fact that the employee's <br />spouse, son, daughter, or parent is on active duty in the Armed Forces in support of a <br />contingency operation. <br />Military Funeral Leave <br />The City shall grant up to ten (10) working days of a leave of absence without pay to an <br />employee whose immediate family member, as a member of the United States armed forces, has <br />been killed while engaged in active service. "Immediate family member" means the employee's <br />parent, child, grandparents, siblings or spouse. An employee must give as much notice as <br />practicable of the employee's intent to exercise this leave and complete a "Request for Leave" <br />form, copy attached. The length of leave provided under this section may be reduced by any <br />period of paid leave provided by the City. <br />An eligible employee may also take unpaid FMLA leave under the Military Family <br />Leave, Qualifying Exigency section of this handbook arising out of the fact that the employee's <br />spouse, son, daughter, or parent is on active duty in the Armed Forces in support of a <br />contingency operation. <br />School Conference and Activities Leave <br />An employee will be granted up to a total of 16 hours during any school year to attend <br />school conferences or school -related activities related to the employee's child, in the manner <br />provided for in Minn. Stat. § 181.9412, subject to the following requirements: <br />a. The employee must work an average of twenty or more hours per week. <br />b. The conference or school -related activities cannot be scheduled during non -work <br />hours. <br />For the purpose of such leave, a "child" means an individual under eighteen (18) years of <br />age or an individual under age twenty (20) who is still attending secondary school. When such <br />leave cannot be scheduled during non -work hours and the need for the leave is foreseeable, the <br />employee must provide reasonable prior notice of such leave to the City and make a reasonable <br />41 <br />142286x12 <br />
