INTRODUCTION <br />Welcome to the City <br />Welcome to the City of Orono. We are happy to have you as an employee and look <br />forward to a productive employment relationship with you. Orono is a unique "rural oasis," and <br />we hope you enjoy working with and for Orono's citizens during your tenure with the City. <br />Conduct as a City Employee <br />This handbook contains personnel policies and procedures approved by the City Council <br />that govern City employee relations. These policies and procedures are guidelines only and <br />are not to be construed as contractual terms of employment. Any aspect of these policies <br />and procedures may be changed at any time at the sole discretion of the City Council without <br />prior notice. <br />The policies and procedures in this handbook have been established in accordance with <br />applicable laws, ordinances and governmental regulations. If it is determined that any provision <br />of this handbook is contrary to any law, ordinance or governmental regulation, that provision <br />will become void and the law, ordinance or governmental regulation will be in full force and <br />effect. <br />Employees covered by a collective bargaining agreement for any of the provisions in this <br />handbook will be governed by the collective bargaining agreement with regard to those <br />provisions. <br />Employees covered by an employment contract for any of the provisions in the handbook <br />will be governed by the employment contract with regard to those provisions. <br />In the event any provision of this handbook is determined to be contrary to the provisions <br />of a particular City department manual, the provisions within the particular department manual <br />will control. <br />It is the responsibility of each employee to know all of the policies and procedures <br />contained in this handbook. Violation of the policies and procedures may be grounds for <br />disciplinary action up to and including discharge. <br />Each employee will be issued a copy of this handbook. The employee is required to read <br />the handbook and to sign an acknowledgement stating that they have read, understand, and agree <br />to comply with the handbook policies and procedures. <br />Besides these personnel policies and procedures, employees are expected to read and be <br />familiar with the special orders, training bulletin, and other publications specific to the <br />142286v11 <br />
