 . Hennepion County
An Equal Opportunity Employer
Iy CF July 22, 1994
2 5 1994
Mr. Denny
idge G1TY OF ORONO
TEA Architects
2724 West 43rd Street
Minneapolis, MN 55410
RE: Nelson Entry Gate, 460, 500, and 550 Tonkawa Road, Orono
Dear Denny:
As we discussed, Hennepin County cannot permit the proposed mail box turnout
on the northeast corner of the above driveway onto County State Aid Highway
(CSAH) 135, Tonkawa Road. Although the sight-distance (visibility) at the
main driveway is above minimum standards, any access point north of it
becomes hazardous due to the hill south of the driveway. Any vehicle
exiting the proposed approach will have far sub-standard sight-distance to
the south and any southbound vehicle turning left into the proposed entrance
would be similarly inhibited from seeing northbound traffic.
Our recommendation would be to enhance the existing approach by increasing
the south radius of the driveway, and relocating the mail boxes to the north
side. This action would result in at least two worthwhile improvements.
First, the approach would be more perpendicular to the road, thereby easing
turning movements in and out. Secondly, the letter carriers and residents
could pull into the approach to access the mail boxes and not be parked on
the roadway.
The enclosed sketch is one way of accomplishing this installation, but we
are willing to explore other possibilities. I would also be available to
meet at the site to "brainstorm" the situation.
Thanks for the timely inquiry and please feel free to call with further
questions or to schedule a meeting.
Sin ely,
te_
David K.
