We do not want this <br />issue viewed in that way. It is hopeful that the conversations <br />that a,---e occurring between City Councils for each City, will <br />alleviate that conception. The majority opinion believed that <br />such a recommendation may encourage formal discussion between <br />both cities, but that Long Lake must be made aware of the City of <br />Orono's true intent. We included a statement indicating that the <br />City of Orono does not wish to compete with the established <br />commercial community of Long L =..ke. but to assist and support its <br />perpetuation." <br />Butler congratulated the Planning Commission. The Mayor, <br />Council, and audience applauded. <br />Goetten stated that she was impressed with what the Planning <br />Commission had accomplished in such a short period of time. She <br />asked Kelley to please convey to the Planning Commission members <br />the Council's appreciation for their hard work. . <br />Jabbour expressed his admiration for Planning Commission's <br />efforts, especially in respect to the way in which the February <br />20 Public Hearing was conducted. <br />Kelley stated that the Public Hearing helped the Planning <br />Commission focus on the issue. <br />Mayor Peterson said. "Of 311 of the comments I received <br />regarding that meeting, not one was. negative, even from those <br />that did not agree with the recommendation." <br />Goett -an stated that she appreciated the honesty and direct <br />approach the Planning Commission gave to this issue. <br />Bellows asked Council when they intended to take action on <br />the Planning Commission recommendation. She said, "Due to the <br />sense of urgency that was conveyed by the citizens, we feel that <br />the Council needs to take action on this soon. The residents <br />indicate=d that they have been out there working very hard for- a <br />long period of time. That is part of the reason we worked so <br />quickly to prepare our recommendation." <br />Butler stated that she was ready to make a motion to accept <br />the Planning Commission's recommendation, acid that :�t be <br />transmitted to MNDOT as soon as possible. <br />Mayor Peterson stated that size agreed wi .h the <br />recommendation, but wished to remove the language pertaining to <br />the adversarial role the City of Lon -; Lake may take toward the <br />aspect of the consolidation of Orono and Long Lake.
